On Buddha¡¯s Birthday

Monk Suksang said to his master, Do-o,
¡°What is the principle that everything seen is Buddha?¡±
Master Do-o called a novice.
The novice answered, ¡°Yes sir¡±
Master Do-o said to him, ¡°Bring some water in the pitcher.¡±
A little later Master Do-o turned to his disciple, monk Suksang
And said all of a sudden,
¡°What did you ask me just a moment ago?¡±
On the point of monk Suksang opening his mouth to answer,
Master Do-o stood up and went to his room.
At this, monk Suksang got enlightened.

In this way
Buddha of great mercy and compassion reveals himself.
How admirable this is!
Though we are with Buddha all the time,
We have turned our backs on him without recognizing him.
How sinful we are!

Today I've taken off the pillory
That has been around my neck for so long!
How relieved I am!
What a delight it is
To turn on the light of my mind that has been off for so long!
We should never forget
Our gratitude for Buddha's enlightening all the world.
